EACH presentation at Euroanalysis 2025

On September 01, 2025 Ivo Leito presented a keynote lecture in the education session of the Euroanalysis 2025 conference in Barcelona (Spain) titled Excellence in Analytical Chemistry: a Joint Master’s Programme. The talk gave a brief overview of the programme, then focused on three specific topics which were deemed to be of interest to listeners and received numerous questions from the audience.

The first topic (slides 6-9 in the presentation) was about linking analytical chemistry teaching to the societal topics (economic and legal aspects of chemical analysis) on the example of a student team work project about helping a virtual lab to set up trace element analysis according to the EU’s Drinking water directive. In order to successfully complete the task the students have to bring together knowledge from five different courses (Economic aspects of measurements, Atomic spectroscopy, Quality systems, Measurements and the law, Metrology in Chemistry).

The second topic (slides 10-13 in the presentation) focused on the career prospects analytical chemists in general and EACH graduates in particular. The talk presented the activities aimed at enhancing the employability of EACH graduates and the current state of EACH graduates finding positions after graduation: 120 out of the 132 graduates of the eight EACH intakes who have graduated up to now, i.e., 91%, have secured a position – either a job or a PhD position within a few months after graduation!

The third topic (slides 14-18 in the presentation) presented a plan of advancing analytical chemistry teaching throughout Europe via setting up the so-called EACHub: an initiative aiming at creating a platform of analytical chemistry collaboration, sharing of teaching resources, connecting academia with industry, etc. All interested universities are welcome to join! We hope that this initiative will contribute significantly to the development of analytical chemistry education in Europe.
